What are these talks all about?

On the first Thursday (usually) of every even numbered month we invite a speaker to make a talk and presentation to the public. The topics are quite varied and the talk will typically go for 45 minutes with time for questions afterward. Many of the speakers these days use electronic projectors or overhead projectors and the material isn’t too heavy, even if the topic may sound complex. Very rarely we will invite speakers who hold opposing view points over an issue to liven things up.

Meetings are currently held at Winston’s Bar, 192 Pirie Street, commencing at 6:30 pm. Drinks are available at the bar before the meal,

The cost of the meal + entry is $22.00 per head.

We will also occasionally hold other special meetings if we have guests from interstate or overseas.

Next meeting: Thursday 4 December 2008—Aboriginal skies

Paul Curnow, a council member of the Astronomical Society of South Australia and current serving Publicity Officer for the Field Geology Club of South Australia, has been a lecturer at the Adelaide Planetarium since 1992.

Paul has a strong interest in Ethno-astronomy and runs evenings at the Adelaide Planetarium teaching people about the different cultural views of the night sky. His recent work includes working with the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center Planetarium in Ohio, in the creation of a show that features Indigenous Australian Aboriginal stories of the night sky; it is this topic he will be discussing.

Aboriginal Australians have been gazing at the night sky for 45,000+ years, over which time they accumulated a detailed knowledge of the heavens. Regrettably, as a result of European occupation, much of this knowledge has been lost. Nevertheless, snippets of this knowledge have survived and in this lecture Paul will introduce you to some of the Aboriginal constellations and the names they gave them, comparing them to modern views of these stellar patterns.
